NWLS assists individuals and families who are struggling to meet basic needs. We can walk you through your rights and responsibilities when applying for public benefits such as food, health care, child care, and utility assistance.
You can apply for most public benefits either online or by submitting a paper application. The process will require you to provide information about your household, income, and sometimes your resources.
You can apply for benefits online at COMPASS or by requesting a paper application from your local County Assistance Office (CAO). After you apply, you will receive a decision notice and, if approved, your benefits will begin within a few weeks. Benefits may be provided through an EBT card, direct deposit, or other methods, depending on the program.
To keep your public benefits active, you must meet ongoing requirements:
Eligibility for public benefits depends on your income, household size, and sometimes your resources. Each program has its own guidelines.
You may be asked to provide documents to prove your eligibility. The agency must explain what is needed and give you a chance to respond.
Applications for public benefits can be denied, delayed, or result in lower benefits than expected for many reasons. Public benefits are designed to help you meet basic needs if you qualify, and you have the right to a fair process.
If your public benefits application is denied or your benefits are changed, you can appeal the decision.
We can guide you through the process of applying for benefits like Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, LIHEAP, and Child Care Works. If you are having trouble gathering documents or understanding eligibility requirements, we will explain what is needed and help you complete forms.
If your application is denied, your benefits are reduced, or your case is closed, we'll review your notice and explain your rights. We can help you request a fair hearing or file an appeal if you disagree with a decision.
Our attorneys may be able to represent you at administrative hearings before the Department of Human Services or other agencies. Our team helps you prepare evidence, organize documents, and present your case to a hearing officer or judge.
If you are told you were overpaid and must pay money back, we can review your case, explain your options, and help you challenge incorrect overpayment claims.
If you are facing issues with public benefits, contact the NWLS team to find out if you qualify for free legal assistance.
