Major Sources of Funding
Northwestern Legal Services is primarily funded by grants from federal and state
governments. On the federal level, NWLS receives a grant from the Legal Services Corporation. On the state
level, NWLS receives funds distributed through Pennsylvania Legal Services. This includes
funding from Title XX, The Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts (IOLTA), Disability Advocacy
Program (DAP), and funds allocated to Legal Services by the Pennsylvania General
Assembly. Our current fiscal year funding from the above sources
totals $769,857.
Other Forms of Funding Received
A grant from the Violence Against Women Office, Office of Justice Programs,
U.S. Department of Justice was awarded in the amount of $349,775 for the period
of October 1, 2001 through March 31, 2003 to assist victims of domestic
violence, stalking, and sexual assault. This grant award funds a new project
named The Blossom Project.
A grant from IOLTA (Interest on Lawyer's Trust Account) of $18,000 for development
of an Electronic Case Organizer that will assist advocates with the organization
and management of Supplemental Security Income cases.
A grant from $15,00 IOLTA to create video programs and web-based
materials to assist low-wage workers with the challenges that confront them. The
materials will strive to maximizing our clients' limited income, securing
government benefits that they are still entitled to receive, and accessing civil
legal services in areas that can help "stretch their dollars" for
basic human needs.
A grant from Erie Community Foundation of $10,000 to implement various
technological improvements in our file server and systems currently in place at
NWLS.
A Technology grant from Pennsylvania Legal Services of $11,539 to supplement
expenses incurred in improving our program technologies.
Other miscellaneous funding of $43,700.
