Technology at NWLS

As technology in the workplace continues to evolve, Northwestern Legal Services makes every effort to enhance program operations with it. In July 2005, we replaced our main file server in the Erie office with a new system that substantially increased our performance capabilities. The new server upgraded our use of e-mail, and provided staff throughout the region with access to intake data and shared calendars -- an important platform to communicate with law workers and support staff across the ten counties we serve. The new server also facilitated our use of SharePoint technology. One of the most important technological developments at NWLS in 2005 was the upgrade to a new case management system -- Kemp’s Prime. NWLS co-directors of technology customized the software by creating our own fields, queries, forms, reports, as well as a custom menu system. This assists staff in conducting errors checks, creating custom reports, and managing links to our online resources. These links also provide information regarding program priorities, case criteria, as well as self-help instruction on using the software. We also use Prime to automate the creation of certain client letters and interoffice documentation. As mentioned above, in 2005 we began the process of converting our existing Intranet site into a Microsoft SharePoint platform. Developed initially as a business application, SharePoint provides an interface where users can share documents and information, as well as communicate and collaborate on specific tasks. SharePoint supports the sharing of information for all staff in our network, and this, in turn, leads to increased efficiency in the workplace. We plan to use SharePoint to collaborate in the drafting of pleadings, briefs, and other documents. We also plan to use Shared Meeting spaces to help formulate training sessions, meetings, or other group-related events. When used in conjunction with Windows 2003 Small Business Server and Office 2003, SharePoint will provide significant integration of our application software. It is also important to note that an Electronic Case Organizer (ECO) developed by NWLS co-directors of technology is a software application used by NWLS law workers in SSI cases. The ECO enables law workers to organize data, eliminate repetitive tasks, identify key dates and deadlines for petitions and hearings, track the progress of a case from intake through final disposition, and manage the many details that are inherent to this type of legal proceeding. |
