In 2005, Northwestern Legal Services handled 5,521 cases,
and closed 4,380 cases, for clients in our 10-county service
area. Of the nine major case types that NWLS law workers
handled for low-income clients, four areas of the law
accounted for the vast majority (nearly 98%) of our work.
These four areas are the following:

Family Law (37%) -- The area includes cases such as
child custody and visitation, child support, domestic abuse
cases, parental rights and guardianship.
Government Benefits (24%) -- Cases in this area of
the law include Supplemental Security Income (SSI),
unemployment compensation, food stamps, Aid to Families with
Dependent Children (AFDC), and other types of welfare and
work-related benefits.
Housing (20%) -- This area includes housing issues
such as landlord/tenant disputes, along with cases involving
public housing and federally subsidized housing programs
such as Section 8.
Consumer/Finance (17%) -- Cases in this area of
the law include bankruptcies, debt collection, repossession,
contracts, unfair sales practices, and public utilities.
