Community Education

When people think of legal aid at NWLS, what often comes to mind is the direct representation and counsel we provide to low-income clients. Our work, however, encompasses much more than this. In addition to legal advocacy, we are also involved in an active program of community legal education to empower individuals to seek justice on their own behalf. A full-time community educator is employed at NWLS to interact with our client community and with other social service agencies that share part of our mission.

Along with presentations to community groups, we distribute a wide array of legal education brochures that offer information on areas of the law such as landlord/tenant relations, unemployment compensation, child custody and consumer law. NWLS also publishes a quarterly newsletter, The People's Voice, that contains a variety of information on civil legal topics and concerns, as well as updates on social service programs that benefit our client community. We also distribute videotape copies of our television program, Access to Justice, to other legal services organization across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and to social service agencies that serve low-income clients.
