NWLS provides legal representation and counsel in civil legal matters to low-income individuals and families throughout our 10-county program region. Income eligibility is set by the Legal Services Corporation (a federal agency) at approximately 125 percent of the federal poverty guidelines as established by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
In 2002, we handled 5445 cases and closed 4293 cases -- an increase in both the number of cases handled and closed during the previous two years.
Although NWLS provides legal aid in a variety of civil legal areas, the vast majority our services fall into four substantive categories: family law; housing; public benefits; consumer/ finance; and other; including education, employment, juvenile, medical. Legal aid in these four categories accounted for 98 percent of the cases closed by NWLS in 2002. A summary of the cases during the year includes the following:
